Frequently Asked Questions

Can Argentines enter the Malvinas Islands?

Yes, Argentines, like any citizen of the world, can enter. Currently Argentines do not require an advance visa.
The entry requirements are as follows:

  • Valid passport
  • Be over 18 years old, or have documentation authorizing solo travel.
  • Round-trip ticket
  • Hotel or accommodation reservation.
  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover food during the stay.
  • Travel insurance covering medical evacuation in case of emergency. Insurance covering between 250,000 and 2,000,000 dollars.
How often are the flights to the islands?

There is only one weekly flight (on Saturdays) for civilian passengers, flying from Punta Arenas. Once a month, on the second Saturday, that flight makes a stopover in Argentina. It is operated by LATAM and is the only way for the group to enter from Rio Gallegos.

What time exactly does the flight depart from Rio Gallegos?

The scheduled time is usually 2:00 PM, but it depends on the plane's arrival from Punta Arenas. We recommend being at the airport 3 hours in advance for international procedures.

What happens if the flight is cancelled due to bad weather before leaving Gallegos?

If the airline cancels due to weather, the flight is usually rescheduled for the following day. Extra hotel and meal expenses in Gallegos are the passenger's responsibility. (It's important to have good travel insurance.)

What type of vehicles are used for local transfers on the Island?

A mini-bus is used for the airport. For excursions to the hills, a minibus takes us to the base. To reach the estancias with penguin colonies, 4x4 off-road vehicles equipped for difficult terrain are used. One or two local tourism agencies are hired to handle all logistics on the Island.

Is the trip only about visiting and reviewing historical sites?

No, the idea is also to enjoy the landscape and natural sites, such as hills, fields and beaches. There is plenty of wildlife to see, such as king penguins, dolphins, birds like plovers and sandpipers, and sea lions.

Can you walk on the white sand beaches?

Yes, in places like Volunteer Point or Bertha's Beach the sand is white and fine, similar to the Caribbean but with freezing water.

Is it true that the water is turquoise in color?

Yes, on sunny days, the contrast between the white sand and clear water creates amazing turquoise tones.

Will we do any activities in the water, like kayaking?

Yes, we include this activity and try to schedule it for the day with the best weather conditions. However, there is usually a lot of wind, which can sometimes make it difficult. We will also try to do some Stand Up Paddle practice.
