An imposing marvel
Sighted from more distant horizons, the Nevado de Chañi massif is a notable geologically significant altitude has little to do with the Andes proper. It consists of several peaks, all above 5000 meters above sea level, arising from prominent edges that flow westward and southward. SCHEDULE (journey from Salta to Jujuy with summit ascent)
Recommendation: Saturday 23 to sleep in Santa Rosa de Tastil, at 3000 masl, acclimatizing to go.
Day 1 (Sunday 24/3): Check options air or bus to arrive. JUMPING & SAN BERNARDO. Meeting in Salta and departure to San Bernardo charter vehicle of the Foxes, village located 3000 m, along the road that goes to San Antonio of the Coppers, near the Train to the Clouds. They descend from the vehicle and put up camp next to some beautiful trees that provide shade. A brief tour of the area. Hydration. Dinner and overnight.
Day 2 (Monday 25): POTRERO Chañi. With the first rays of light breakfast, backpacks and "heading". Day trekking quiet until next camping site in "Potrero de Chañi", a picturesque village located 3400 m. 6 hour hike for the day. Hiking around the area and acclimatization night in town. Views of the south wall of our front Chañi.
Day 3 (Tuesday 26): Corral Blanco. We continue our tour, now for a more open and gradual slope. We passed Pasnato, an old native settlement and then finally ascend to the place of the Chañi Portezuelo. The camp site is called Corral Blanco, located exactly at 4000 m. We will set up the tents and we have to hydrate. Free time, dinner and overnight. Approx. Run 7 h.).
Day 4 (Wednesday 27): Ovejería. Day climb to over Chañi (PORTEZUELO) to reach the Abra de Reyes (boundary between Salta and Jujuy - 4200 m) from where we descend to Ovejería (3600 masl), a fantastic village located in the jujeño side. We will spend the night of refuge in a house typical of the area. Rest and free to explore the site. (Time approx. trekking 8 hs.).
Day 5 (Thursday 28): Breakfast. We begin our gradual ascent to attempt the summit of the hill. As you gain altitude we go to appreciate the extraordinary framework gives us the area. Lunch between. Look for a place to build our intermediate camp, beside a stream. We will hydrate. Dinner and overnight 4100 m.
Day 6 (Friday 29): Breakfast. Disarm the camp and continue the ascent for a slowly advance in northern Chañi circus. There we will find the refuge north of the base, a classic cement construction, at 4800 meters above sea level, which serves as repair, before the great assault on summit. We will have lunch some rest and hydration. Brief recognition area. We will have an earlier dinner and then overnight. 4800 m
Day 7 (Saturday 30): SUMMIT ATTEMPT. We got up very early, 2 am. Have some breakfast and departure for the summit with headlamps and basic equipment + lots of fluids and energy. A long stretch level to the base, then a major climb through loose rock to the Abra de Chañi (5400 m). From there we continued along the ridge towards the summit. Should reach it, take pictures and we were soon back down to the shelter. Now we will recovery and rest. We will spend the night at 4800 m.
Day 8 (Easter Sunday): Breakfast. Ovejería Descent. Recovery day, relax and rest. Meeting with the group of trekking ‘’Vuelta al Chañi’’ (fast option)
Day 9 (Monday 1 holiday): Breakfast. We will disarm camp before the long trek to Molulo, almost at the end of the valley. This will be the last night on the mountain. We will have a farewell dinner.
Tuesday Holiday: Breakfast. Last two hours to Leon, again in the Quebrada de Humahuaca. End of tour. Drive to San Salvador de Jujuy. We can have a nice shower before homecoming or option to stay overnight in the city and return the next day. End of program.
Crossing and demanding ascent. Should have prior experience and climb height.
