Itinerary

  • Day 1: Meeting in the afternoon in Chos Malal. Gear check and guide introductions. Recommended lodging (not included).

  • Day 2: From Chos Malal, we will transfer by vehicle (this transfer is not included; we recommend private or rented vehicles and we will split up among them). We will pass through Andacollo, Las Ovejas, and Varvarco. The final stretch of the journey is of singular beauty, featuring twists, turns, climbs, and descents, while the gigantic Cordillera del Viento (Wind Mountain Range) gradually comes into view. This is where the Domuyo Volcano stands at 4709 m above sea level—the highest peak in Patagonia and the goal of our dreams. Arrival at the "Playón" (parking/staging area) and start of the trek. We will head into the great valley south of the massive volcano. Its mysterious and majestic silhouette invites and calls to us. We will pass by numerous high-altitude lagoons with a high mineral content, such as sulfur and iron. Arrival at base camp, at nearly 3000 m above sea level. From here, the view is truly astonishing: hanging glaciers, volcanic terrain, abyssal slopes, and eternal snows. Overnight stay.

  • Day 3: Acclimatization day, short hikes, and crampon practice. We will go on a trek to practice using crampons and take in spectacular views of the region. Another night at base camp.

  • Day 4: Summit attempt. We will ascend the well-defined southern spur and reach a large platform with unimaginable views of glaciers and valleys. From this point, it is very likely that we will need to use crampons and ice axes, marking the beginning of the true ascent. Step by step, pacing our breathing properly, we will ascend along the ridge that will lead us to the false summit and, subsequently, to the long-awaited peak at 4709 m above sea level. A sea of mountains and dreamlike landscapes unfolds below and in the distance. Photos and celebrations before returning to our high camp or base camp.

  • Day 5: Descent to the Playón. We will transfer to the Aguas Calientes Hot Springs, where we will spend some time enjoying the place. Afterwards, the final trip back to Chos Malal, Zapala, Neuquén, or wherever each participant is traveling to. End of our services.

Note

Our style in expeditions to Domuyo:
There are several ways to try to access the summit of any mountain. In this case there are options to make rapid ascents in duration and very explosive, trying the summit from the Base Camp. We have been visiting the mountain for more than 15 years with groups and we have always given importance to gradual acclimatization and the realization of a high camp, so that everyone has the best and greatest chances of achieving the objective. In this way, our expedition to Domuyo lasts a week, to enjoy the wonderful surroundings and to give each body the option to prepare and acclimatize properly.

Where to sleep

In high mountain tents, for 2 or 3 people.
